Some sights stand out from the field - like a horse walking a dog along a suburban street.

So, when Dunedin teenager Chris Myers decided to take his new horse head mask on its maiden run yesterday it was odds-on it would end in a photo finish.

''I just wanted to give people a bit of a laugh and see the reactions. There were quite a few shocked expressions on people's faces as they drove past us,'' he said.

''It's a really realistic-looking mask, but it's a bit freaky.''

The 17-year-old Bayfield High School pupil bought the latex mask for $18 from China, with the intention of wearing it to his school's masquerade ball.

But it became a firm favourite as soon as it arrived in his mailbox yesterday. ''My grandma dared me to take the dog for a walk in it,'' he said.

''The dog didn't seem to mind too much. She was a bit sceptical when she first saw it and gave it a sniff. But once we started walking, she didn't really take much notice.''

Chris beat his dog home by a head.
