Police pull over a motorist as part of a crackdown on people using cellphones while driving, in Crawford St, central Dunedin, yesterday.

Police said they had issued about half a dozen infringements in the Dunedin area over the past two mornings for people using a cellphone while driving.

"We understand mornings can be extremely busy, but we would like to remind drivers that using your phone while driving is illegal and can and does contribute to serious and fatal crashes, and police will continue to target this behaviour," a police spokesman said.

"Police see too many preventable deaths on our roads and we make no exceptions for targeting high-risk behaviours we know are large contributors to crashes and whether you walk away or are carried away."
