A Dunedin postie considers herself lucky she was not run over and seriously injured after she was the victim of a hit-and-run.
DX Mail postie Lisa Jamieson (44), of Dunedin, said she was stopped at the lights at the intersection of Bay View Rd and King Edward St on her motorbike when a dark red, older style, Ford Falcon in front, reversed into her.
She was very "sore'' as a result, but otherwise unhurt.
"I came up to the lights ... and a car was in front of me and next thing her backing lights come on and she backed into me,'' Miss Jamieson said.
"I was screaming at her. She must have known but she never looked at me at all. It was as if she quickly checked and then carried on like it never happened.''
Miss Jamieson managed to hold the bike up and keep her feet as the car made impact and said if she had not been able to do that, things could have been a lot worse.
"I knew that if the bike went down, she was going to run over me. She could have quite easily pinned me under the bike and the car. After it was all over I just went across the road and burst into tears. I was in so much shock.''
She estimated the car reversed about 1m before making impact but her motorbike was undamaged.
"I always stop back because of things like that [but] there was just nowhere to go.''
Despite the shock, Miss Jamieson went on to deliver the rest of her mail and said she felt it necessary to do so.
She hoped the driver was caught and encouraged other drivers to be more aware of bikes and motorbikes on the road.
Police were investigating the accident, which happened about 8.45am yesterday.
Police said they received a report of an early '90s dark red Ford Falcon reversing into a stationary motorbike.
The vehicle was reportedly driven by a woman, who turned left into King Edward St, heading towards the South Dunedin shops.
Police were appealing for anyone who might have witnessed the crash, or the driver of the vehicle, to contact them on (03) 471-4800.
Witnesses could also pass information on anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555-111.
