Historic musical moment for Mathieson

Former Dunedin conductor Holly Mathieson will have a ringside seat to a moment in British music history later this year.

Mathieson will be assistant conductor to United States conductor Marin Alsop, who will become the first woman to conduct the BBC Last Night of the Proms in London on September 7.

She will also assist Alsop with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment concert on August 17. It will be the first time in the 119-year history of the Proms in England that the concert has been led by a woman conductor.

Mathieson conducted the Southern Sinfonia's Last Night of the Proms at the Regent Theatre in 2005 and is now artistic director of the Horizont Musik-Kollektiv in Berlin and co-directs the Reuleaux Ensemble in London.

Alsop, who is principal conductor of the Sao Paulo State Symphony Orchestra, will lead a programme that features violinist Nigel Kennedy and mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato.
