The Dunedin City Council will consider increasing its share of the cost to build a new pool in Mosgiel when it settles on the 10-year plan next week.

A budget of $6.4million has already been included in the draft plan but a $10.4million option has been added for councillors to consider, when they meet to deliberate on the plan next week.

There were 427 comments received on the Mosgiel pool during the consultation phase of the plan. Most requested a higher level of funding from the city council.

In his report to councillors, parks and recreation manager Robert West said the increase would cover the additional costs of the build such as demolition of the old pool building and also cover a "modest" facility which included a six-lane pool and toddler pool.

A more substantial upgrade which could include a hydro therapy pool, an additional two lanes and a dedicated learn-to-swim pool would still need to be funded through donations, charitable trusts and naming rights.

It is estimated a substantial upgrade of the pool would cost about $11.3million, which did not include any additional costs which were estimated to be about $2.5million.

Taieri Communities Facility Trust chairwoman Irene Mosley said the suggested increase was exactly what the trust asked for and what was needed to start the project.

There were at least three charitable trusts waiting to see how the councillors voted before they made any commitments, Mrs Mosley said.

"If the DCC takes the lead we've got other funders waiting to jump on board, which is the way it should be."

About $1million has been raised by the trust so far.

The council and the trust were still working together to make a decision the pool's design and both capital and operational costs.
