Hen carcasses `absolutely last batch'

More hen carcasses arrived on a Palmerston area farm yesterday to be composted, despite Mainland Poultry saying last week it had ended the practice.

Concerns about odours from composting of the end-of-lay birds on two properties have led to numerous complaints to the Otago Regional Council in the past 12 months.

Mainland provided the bird carcasses but, after receiving complaints, decided to stop the practice.

Mainland operations manager Jeff Winmill said yesterday he had put a stop to supplying farmers with the carcasses last week, but had failed to realise there was a "small flock" of 4000-5000 birds that he could not make alternative arrangements for at short notice.

"This is absolutely the last batch that will be composted."

The intention now was to have the carcasses rendered down and processed, but he could not get processing space for those birds at such late notice, he said.
