Taieri residents have their chance to help make Christmas special for the children of those less fortunate this season.
The Mosgiel Community Foodbank hopes to distribute 100 gifts to children in the area through a Mosgiel Roundtable Wishing Tree Appeal.
Roundtable NZ national president Grant Gibson, of Mosgiel, said a tree was put up at the Mosgiel BNZ on Monday.
It was adorned with cards identifying who a gift is for - a girl aged 8, for example.
People could take a card and replace it with a suitable gift. People could place gifts until December 16.
The Roundtable would supply extra presents should any cards be left over.
The Warehouse was giving a 30% discount on gifts for the tree.
The gifts would be distributed by the foodbank, together with food parcels assembled after Monday night's food drive.
Organiser Michelle Kerr said the annual drive was all ready to go, rain, hail or shine, and people should listen from 6pm for the sirens indicating collectors were on their street. Long-life staples were best.
Mr Gibson said it was the first time a Roundtable group in New Zealand had done a tree, and if it went well the idea could be rolled out nationwide.
