About 150 servicemen's headstones will shine as new for people heading to Andersons Bay Cemetery today to pay their respects.

The headstones have been removed during the past few months, their inscriptions repainted, their bases newly concreted and the headstones replaced as part of a joint project between Veterans Affairs New Zealand and the Dunedin City Council.

Veterans Affairs corporate services manager Elaine Davies, of Wellington, said the project was part of ongoing restabilisation work on soldiers' cemeteries throughout the country.

Other headstones in the Andersons Bay Cemetery had been being restored and restabilised during the past few years, but this was likely to be the most obvious piece of work to be done.

Craig Morton, of Dunedin Monumental Masons, said his company was one of three contractors working on the project.

There were another five rows of headstones to finish, which he expected would take another two months, depending on the weather.
