The 5-year-old from Mosgiel was among about 100 people who showed up for the Outram Volunteer Fire Brigade’s community day yesterday.
Firefighter Leah Barron said the event, which included fire engine rides and live fire demonstrations, was organised to say thank you to the community, which had raised about $50,000 for the station.
Their "huge effort" paid for a new van, which had been kitted out with a range of equipment, including a defibrillator and first aid kit, she said.
It was a particularly special day for Ray, who was joined by his younger brother Joe (3) and grandfather Philip Wilson.
Mr Wilson said that Ray had decided about a year ago he wanted to be a firefighter when he grew up.
"He said he wants to be a goodie, not a baddie."
Joe had a similar dream. He wanted to be a police officer.
In fact, Joe was so dedicated to that goal, he decided not to put on a firefighter helmet when given the chance at the event because it was the "wrong uniform".
Mr Wilson said the brothers were having plenty of fun and had learnt some important fire safety skills.
"They’re loving it."
