Hats on for Active August event

An Olympic-themed cowboy hat, a road cone and a policeman’s hat were just some of the wacky headwear Dunedin pupils wore on their way to school yesterday.

The hats were part of Wacky Wednesday, a Dunedin City Council Active August initiative to get children walking, cycling or scootering to school.

About 300 pupils made their way to Wakari School wearing crazy and colourful hats they had crafted for the commute.

Council school travel plan co-ordinator Charlotte Flaherty said she had seen some brilliant hats.

"The kids love it — they get so excited and they make their hats. They put so much energy into them."

On arrival the pupils received a hot chocolate drink at the school gate before they started their day.

"It is a special treat for today. We go to each of the schools that take part and we give Milo at the school gate during Active August," Mrs Flaherty said.

Six other Dunedin schools and more than 1000 children across Dunedin were taking part in Active August.
