Event committee member, MC and competitor Kylie Hayes, co-owner of salon Moha in St Kilda, said the competition was ''great''.
The hairdressing contest gave the 30 stylists the chance ''to create their vision on live models'' and reveal their technical skill.
''It is easy to hide a multitude of sins in a photograph but to do real good, honest live hairdressing is bloody hard.''
The stylists created ''pure art''.
Senior hair stylist of the year from Otago was Mandy Taylor, of Zaibatsu Hair Art.
The team to represent Otago at the national finals in Hamilton in October comprises Rhea Cameron, of Sliver Haircutters, Heidi Van Zoelan, of Klone Hair, Mandy Taylor, of Ziabatsu Hair Art, and Mason Robust, of Brotherhood Barbers.
