Scissors flashed like lightning in the Dunedin Town Hall as some of the South's best stylists battled through a fine mist of hairspray for their shot at national glory.

Supported by dance music and about 400 spectators, more than 160 senior and apprentice hair stylists competed in the Otago Fashion Hair Design Awards and the Oceanic Masters Awards on Sunday.

The event was the chance for up to two senior stylists and two apprentices to represent Otago at the New Zealand Association of Registered Hairdressers' Supreme Awards in Christchurch in September.

Otago Hairdressers Association president Darryl McNamara said many stylists targeted every second regional finals as their chance to make an impact on the national stage.

Stylists spent many hours practising their presentation.

Hair styles were complemented with tens of thousands of dollars of clothing and accessories.

Inter-salon competition between events meant entries consistently set new standards, he said.

"Every year it just gets tougher and tougher to get on our Supreme Team.

"This is a hard competition, one of the hardest in the country, and we can be confident that the very best get recognised."

The Otago Supreme Team bound for Christchurch will be Kylie Hayes (senior cutting and senior styling), Nicole Knox (apprentice styling) and Ashlee Clearwater (apprentice cutting).
