A procession of Minis rolled into Dunedin yesterday heralding the return of a Kiwi classic to New Zealand screens.

Dunedin was the second-last stop for the rally which travelled from Kaitaia to Invercargill in homage to what is arguably the most well-known tribute to Minis - Goodbye Pork Pie.

The remake of the 1981 Geoff Murphy film would be released in cinemas today.

Director Matt Murphy, son of Geoff Murphy, said marking the release of the film by doing a rally down the country had been a good way to celebrate the spirit of the film.

While Mr Murphy had attended everything from a drive-in screening of his new film in Hamilton to the official premiere at Auckland's Civic Centre, tomorrow he planned to fly home to avoid missing an even more important premiere.

''My wife is two days overdue and I really don't want to miss that.''

Among those waiting in Dunedin to greet the rally were Otago Mini Owners Club members Ruth and Gil Edmunds, of Mosgiel. The couple owned six Minis.

Mrs Edmunds said they were ''huge fans'' of the film and estimated they had watched it ''at least 12 times''.

The couple joined the rally in Dunedin and travelled with it to Invercargill for a red carpet screening of the film last night.
