Glee club seeks musical teens

Here's something for Dunedin teenagers to sing about next term - the city is about to get its own glee club.

For many years, Dunedin Theatre and Pantomime Trust directors Heidi Hayward and Greg MacLeod have produced the annual Christmas Pantomime at the Dunedin Town Hall which gave "teens and little ones" an opportunity to act alongside an adult cast.

While there are children's choirs, school choirs and church choirs, along with children's theatre groups and adult societies such as Dunedin Operatic in the city, Mr MacLeod believed there was little for people in their mid to late teens who loved to sing and perform outside of these groups.

"The glee Dunedin inspiration has come about through a desire to bridge this gap."

Mr MacLeod said a glee club was a musical group which specialised in the singing of short songs - glees - by trios or quartets.

Glee Dunedin would consist of 30 vocalists (male and female) singing modern and popular songs, he said.

Auditions would be held on April 12 at Macandrew Intermediate.

The pair hoped to begin rehearsals during the first week of term two.

"We are quite certain that Glee Dunedin will be as successful as our previous ventures and we're really excited to offer a new opportunity for the performing artists in Dunedin," Mr MacLeod said.
