How does a marriage last 65 years?

''I put up with her.''

''He makes a very good chauffeur.''

A sense of humour, respect and a ''lot of give and take'' mean Mosgiel couple Louis (87) and Jill (85) Dignan will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary (blue sapphire) today.

The pair met in Milton in 1946 when Jill Sinclair was working at a mill on a farm and he was working in retail.

Mr Dignan made the move and asked his future wife out - ''the best thing I ever did''.

Four years later, the couple married at the Waihola Presbyterian Church - a logistical challenge, considering everything was shut for Easter.

''Hair had to be done on the Thursday, before everything shut, and kept tidy,'' Mrs Dignan said.

''Food had to be kept fresh; we had no fridge in those days.''

The pair have three children - Tom, Michael and Louise - and one grandchild, Louise's daughter Monique.

Tom Dignan, who lives in Auckland, is down for the anniversary.

He said his parents' milestone was an ''effort to be celebrated''.

About 50 friends and family will mark the occasion at the couple's home today, the celebration catered for by Mrs Dignan, who, by her son's account, is a fantastic cook.

The couple are now aiming for their platinum anniversary, 70 years of marriage.
