It is hoped the facelifts being given to murals on Dunedin bus shelters will help brighten residents' days.

Ten shelters will be repainted this year, with structures in Taieri Rd, Bank St and King Edward St the latest to get facelifts.

Keep Dunedin Beautiful co-ordinator Darlene Thomson said four artists were doing the work, which was a combination of updating late Broad Bay artist John Noakes' bus shelter murals and completing new designs.

His wife, Jennepher Noakes, had given approval for the work, she said.

The environment around each shelter was used as inspiration for the new designs.

Artist Daniel Mead, who immortalised Noakes on the Company Bay bus shelter earlier this year, had just finished a Taieri Rd stop with a mural of his own design featuring dogs, inspired by the dog park behind the bus stop.

New murals had also recently been designed and painted on a shelter in Bank St by Roz Wood and in King Edward St by Jemima Pedro, while Filipa Croftskey was redoing her mural on Marlow Park's fence.
