As with all 27 other Gang Shows held in Dunedin since 1956, the cast of this year's production are again keeping tight-lipped about the show's theme.

Gang Show Otago administration manager Leanne Brockie said 90 scouts and guides from around the region would be participating, and rehearsals had already begun.

The cast of 10- to 24-year-olds met at Waiora Scout Camp at Whare Flat during the weekend for a series of rehearsal workshops, in preparation for their performances at the Mayfair Theatre from July 19-23.

With a budget of about $50,000, a 15-piece orchestra, and an army of volunteers, the show would be far from amateur, she said.

It would contain a mix of old favourites and new music which would support the show's theme.

"All cast members have been sworn to secrecy about the theme, because it's supposed to be a surprise for the audience.

"All I can tell you is that the show is based on a popular children's story which was recently made into a block-buster movie," she said.
