Further arrests related to armed robberies

Five people have now been arrested in relation to a series of armed robberies and an attempted robbery in Dunedin last month.

Detective Sergeant Rob Hanna said two 19-year-old men were arrested in the past week in relation to robberies at the Mornington BP and Green Island Kiwibank in early June.

They join three others, aged 19 and 21, already charged in relation to the robberies and the attempted aggravated robbery of the 10 O'Clock Dairy.

On Friday, Brendan Switalla, a cleaner, admitted the aggravated robberies of the BP and Kiwibank, and a joint charge with two others of the attempted aggravated robbery of the 10 O'Clock Dairy.

He is in custody and will be sentenced on August 30.

The two others, aged 19 and 21, are on bail awaiting their next hearings on a joint charge of attempting to rob a male while armed with an offensive weapon.

A third 19-year-old man was arrested last week and charged jointly with Switalla in relation to the aggravated robberies of the BP and Kiwibank.

On Friday, he was remanded on bail to July 15.

Another 19-year-old man is scheduled to appear in court today in relation to the Kiwibank robbery.

Det Sgt Hanna said the men were associates and not active gang members.

• Dunedin police have arrested a third man following a violent ram-and-smash incident in Fawcett St, Dunedin, on Saturday.

The 21-year-old man is charged jointly with Dillon Hancock (24) and Kevin Hancock (53) under the Crimes Act with intent to cause grievous bodily harm to Lance Barbarich, causing grievous bodily harm to Mr Barbarich and recklessly damaging a 1992 Mazda Familia, knowing that danger to life was likely to ensue.

The employed Mosgiel man was granted interim name suppression. The Hancocks will reappear today.
