Five. Wait, three. No, do six.

Louie McMillan may have seemed indecisive about picking horse numbers at the Boxing Day races in Wingatui yesterday, but that is because he is only 2 and learning to count is still a way off for him.

His parents Justin and Janelle McMillan said they let the toddler choose the numbers because they themselves were no better at picking winning horses.

"We’ve not had any luck winning races yet," Mr McMillan said.

"So he’s not really our lucky charm, but he’s having fun at the end of the day. A few ice creams and a hot dog, he’s great."

Mr McMillan said the family had travelled from Ashburton to spend the Christmas holidays with family in Dunedin, and a trip to the Boxing Day races was always a must.

It was a good way to spend any cash Christmas presents, he said.

"Sometime’s you walk away with a bit more money, but not usually."

Yesterday’s racing was all about family and included a teddy bears’ picnic with children’s entertainment, including a colouring station, lawn games, a teddy bear hunt and a children’s Fashions on the Field competition.

The smell of sunscreen was very noticeable as temperatures at Wingatui rose to about 28degC.

People seemed to be making the most of the sunny weather; MetService is forecasting cooler weather today.

Rain and southeasterlies are forecast for much of the region.
