French rugby supporters from the French Polynesian island of Tahiti, miffed at the 2011 Rugby World Cup result, are in Dunedin as part of a nationwide tour to play rugby and trace the evolution of the All Blacks.

The 26-member team from Les Vieilles Pompes (the Old Shoes Rugby Club) in Papeete, were chauffeured around Dunedin sights yesterday in eight Jaguars and Daimlers from Classic Jaguar Limousines.

After lunch at Larnach Castle, the group went to the Otakou marae to see the grave site of Tom Ellison, captain of New Zealand's first official rugby team and a member of the New Zealand Natives football team which toured Great Britain and Australia in 1888-89.

A visit to Speight's Brewery was also scheduled.

Team member Fred Guidou said the team had visited the New Zealand Rugby Union in Wellington and watched the Hurricanes play the Cheetahs at the "Cake Tin".

Today, the team would play a Pirates side in Dunedin, hoping to "right the wrong" of the French being beaten by the All Blacks in last year's Rugby World Cup.

The visitors would travel to Auckland tomorrow for a match against the Eden Rugby Football Club, and taste New Zealand wines before returning home at the end of the week, Mr Guidou said.
