France test prize for stadium progress

The Otago and Dunedin public have been rewarded for progress on the new stadium and the sell-out success of July's Springboks test with a test against France next year.

The New Zealand Rugby Football Union announced test venues for 2009 yesterday, with Dunedin chosen to host the All Blacks' first international of the year on June 13.

It will be the Tricolours' first test at Carisbrook.

NZRU chief executive Steve Tew told the Otago Daily Times the union wanted to support efforts being made to build a new stadium.

The union also wanted to recognise the support the Dunedin public gave to this year's South Africa test, and all the hard work that had gone in, he said.

The meeting will be the sides' first since France knocked New Zealand out of last year's World Cup.

ORFU chief executive Richard Reid said he was thrilled to get the test, and planning for the match would start straight away.

Carisbrook Stadium Trust chairman Malcolm Farry said the trust had kept in close contact with both the Otago and New Zealand unions.

The NZRU recognised the trust was making good progress and wanted to help the city and get it across the line, Mr Farry said.
