Four people have been winched to safety after a fast-sinking boat got into trouble off the coast of Dunedin.

The Rescue Co-ordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ) received a distress call on maritime radio shortly before 10.30am.

The crew said the boat was sinking fast about 10 nautical miles, or 18.5km, off the Tairei River mouth south of Dunedin.

All four crew members were found in the water after a short search by two helicopters from Otago Helicopters, with Dunedin water rescue staff.

The RCCNZ said they were winched to safety by 11.40am and taken to a waiting ambulance at the Taieri River mouth, where they were assessed by paramedics.

No further information about the boat or its crew was immediately available.
