The space created by demolishing harbourfront sheds may be used for car parks.

Parts of the asbestos-ridden Fryatt St sheds have been completely demolished and it is hoped the area will be cleared by mid-March.

Port Otago marine and infrastructure general manager Sean Bolt said when the sheds were removed, the area was likely to be used for car parking.

He could not confirm whether the parks would be public or private, or how many the space could hold.

Once the site was cleared it would need to assess the possibilities, he said.

The area contains 6500sq m of concrete slab.

The materials left over would be scrapped, as they were largely unusable, he said.

Once cleared, the area would also be open for anglers.
