The University of Otago's Marsh Study Centre takes shape on the site of the former Gardens Tavern at the northern end of Castle St yesterday.

The $3.3 million pub conversion is almost complete and it should be opened next month. Its main purpose is to provide a satellite study environment at the northern end of the university campus.

Elements of the former ''Gardies'' were retained, including the red-brick cladding and distinctive pyramid roof of the upstairs level.
