The Salvation Army is "disappointed" with a community service worker who allegedly stole food bound for Christchurch.
A 21-year-old Dunedin man was arrested yesterday on burglary and theft charges after he allegedly broke into a Salvation Army container full of food and stole items worth less than $500.
Captain Susan McGregor said the man had been working out a community service sentence in the Princes St Family Store.
Donated food was being kept in the container and sent north as required, as there was insufficient storage room in Christchurch after the February quake.
Community service workers were frequently employed by the Salvation Army, but were strictly monitored.
"We are all very careful because they are dealing with public donations," she said.
The man was remanded in custody until April 29.
