Former flatmates of No 3 Clyde St couldn't help themselves singing the slightly modified lyrics from Pink Floyd's The Wall as they prepared to rehang their front door on Saturday.
It was taken down last week after original pink-door flat member Swani Harris, of Wellington, visited Dunedin a year ago and found it in need of restoration.
After talking to ex-flatmate and fellow Pink Floyd fan Barry Jenkins, it was decided a reunion and door restoration were needed.
The door was given its famous paint job in 1988 and is now protected in the flat's lease because it has become "iconic" among students in the city.
The flat has also featured in a documentary and in numerous newspaper articles.
While saving the door was their primary objective, Mr Harris said it had been quite cool just hanging out at the flat again. The reunion had drawn only about half a dozen former flatmates but all appreciated the opportunity for quiet reflection about their year in the "institution".
"It's been 20 years. We've been playing lots of music, drinking lots - making up for lost time," he said.
The day the door came down was filled with the promise and excitement of a return to freedom. But the day it went up again was just as momentous, Mr Jenkins said.
"We'll live on in infamy for another 20 years and then we'll be back for round three."
