Fishing boat catch prompts Bomb Squad callout

The Bomb Squad has been called to Port Chalmers after a fishing boat dragged up what appeared to be an explosive device this afternoon.

The item was discovered by the boat off the entrance to Otago Harbour earlier this afternoon. The boat is moored off Careys Bay awaiting the arrival of the NZ Army bomb squad, who are driving by road from Christchurch.

Part of Carey's Bay was cordoned off in January after another fishing boat trawled up an explosive device.

Experts at the time thought the bomb was probably an isolated weapon, possibly accidentally dropped at sea from an ammunitions dump further out to sea.

In that case the heavily corroded four-finned explosive device was about 50cm long and weighed about 11kg.
