Seeing his portrait for the first time is Prof Peter Crampton, during a celebration of his contributions to the Otago Medical School and the division of health sciences at the University of Otago.

About 50 of his colleagues, friends, students and family attended the unveiling at the university's Hunter Centre yesterday afternoon.

Prof Crampton stepped down as the University of Otago pro-vice-chancellor of health sciences and dean of the Otago Medical School after seven and a-half years earlier this year.

He would leave it up to others to give their thoughts on the portrait by Christchurch artist John Gillies, but he would try his best to look like it.

It will be hung in the university's Barnett lecture theatre, alongside other former medical school deans.

As well as staying on at the university as a researcher and teacher, Prof Crampton has been appointed to the panel conducting a review of New Zealand's health and disability system.
