Otago residents are asked to help make Christmas special for the children of those less fortunate this season.
The Salvation Army hopes to distribute 4500 gifts to families throughout Otago following this year's Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal in Dunedin.
The first gifts were placed under the tree in the Meridian mall yesterday by sisters Sasha (8) and Olivia (6) Barnes-Gardner.
Their mother, Dawn Barnes-Gardner, has been the store's Wishing Tree champion for the past eight years and said the generosity of customers had increased annually.
''We are always blown away,'' she said.
Last year, Otago residents gave 3803 gifts through the appeal.
It was hoped the number would rise again this year to 4500, Mrs Barnes-Gardner said.
Nationwide, Kmart has held the appeal for 19 years, and the Dunedin store has been involved since its establishment 16 years ago.
Gifts did not have to be bought from the store or wrapped to be placed under the Wishing Tree, Mrs Barnes-Gardner said.
''They can come from anywhere, and can even be handmade. People can also make cash donations at our checkouts.''
The money was converted into Kmart gift cards, which, along with Wishing Tree presents, were given to the Salvation Army on Christmas Eve for distribution throughout Otago.
Today, a family fun day with face painting, balloon twisting and Santa will be held at the Dunedin store to celebrate the appeal launch.
