A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said it was called to reports of fire at 12.55am on the hillside at Harington Point.
The Portobello volunteer fire brigade attended the call and found several areas of gorse on fire, measuring about 100m by 20m, on the lower side of Harington Point Rd.
Firefighters called for backup from St Kilda and Wakari, who helped to extinguish the blaze.
There were no structures at risk, and the cause of the fire was not known, he said.
Crews left about 3.40am and would return this morning to ensure there were no hotspots.
