A house fire near the Gardens shopping centre caused gridlock in North Dunedin yesterday. Police were directing traffic near the fire at a residential property.
On arrival, crews discovered a fire and called two more crews from Mosgiel and Willowbank to assist.
A police spokeswoman said the road was closed between Opoho Rd and Chambers St, and motorists were advised to avoid the area.
Traffic was also backed up on the northbound one-way lanes of State Highway 1, a witness said.
A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said crews from St Kilda and Dunedin Central were called to North Rd, North East Valley at 4pm after smoke was seen coming from a property’s roof.
The fire had been extinguished by 6pm.
A fire investigator was expected to visit the house today to determine the cause of the blaze.
Nobody was believed to be injured.
