More than $2m in parking tickets issued

Parking ticket numbers dipped slightly in the 2015-16 year, but the value of those placed on motorists' windscreens increased.

Dunedin motorists were handed more than $2 million worth of parking tickets in the year to June by the city's nine parking officers.

The figure of $2,029,740 was $16,390 more than for 2014-15.

But that amount came from 64,267 tickets, 2301 fewer than the year before.

Dunedin City Council compliance solutions manager Ros MacGill said the likely reason for the increase in the value of tickets was the tickets issued were for higher amounts.

She said offences that increased the value of tickets included longer periods overstayed, no receipts being purchased from pay and display machines, and possibly more unlicensed and unwarranted vehicles being ticketed.

Not all motorists, however, had to pay their fines; 1699 of the 3875 explanations for tickets received were accepted and the tickets waived.

That was 217 more than the year before.

There was an increase in both the number of tickets lodged with the Ministry of Justice for non-payment, and their value. There were 10,768 unpaid tickets lodged with the ministry for collection, 1282 more than the year before.

The value of those unpaid tickets hit a total of $656,035, an increase of $128,897.

Ms MacGill said despite the best efforts of the council to give people every opportunity to pay their tickets, more had remained unpaid and were lodged for collection.

''This could also be related to the fact that a higher number of the tickets issued are for a larger amount in the first place, and therefore people find it harder to pay them in the allowed timeframe.''
