The crowd made the most of the sunny day and were unfazed by a short downpour around midday.
The Dunedin Summer Festival event held something for the whole family.
Games, karting, a carousel and plenty of hot dogs and chips kept the children happy, while craft stalls, music and vintage cars ensured adults did not miss out.
Helicopter rides also proved popular. Helicopters Otago had two machines at the event, taking passengers for short trips along the coast.
"We have been flat out all day," pilot Andy Baird said.
A more serious message was also made as emergency service crews, including rural and Brighton firefighters and St John ambulance, displayed their skills in a mock demonstration.
However, once it was over children took control of the fire trucks' water supply and used the hoses to cool off from the 29degC heat.
Brighton surf life-saver Scott Weatherall said everyone had a good time and the day went off without a hitch.
