More than 4000 athletes from across New Zealand, and further afield, have flocked to Dunedin for the games, which started at the weekend.
The competitors include former world champion discus thrower Beatrice Faumuina.
"Competitors have always been super-friendly, and then everybody respects each other’s space when they’re going in to throw, or to jump, and that’s the beauty about sport," Faumuina said.
"Sport is the common language for everybody who wants to compete, right down to the volunteers who have made the sport successful, and to everybody who supports us.
"There’s quite a lot of crowd out here [on Saturday]. Given the weather, and everything else that’s going on, people still love the sport."
The Masters Games, which were cancelled at the last minute in 2022 due to Covid traffic light settings, began with an opening ceremony on Saturday night.
Costumes — including Masters Games team member Geoff Simons dolled up in his Sergeant Pepper suit — and plenty of medals hit the lawn as competitors, and volunteers, danced the night away to the tunes of seven-piece band Halo.
The games continue today with a variety of sports from jigsaw puzzle racing to darts, squash, golf, football and netball.
The event finishes on Sunday.
