A Dunedin violinist is returning home for a farewell performance before leaving for Germany.

Annabel Drummond said she was ''overjoyed'' after being accepted to study for a master's degree in violin at the University of Music and Theatre ''Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy'' Leipzig.

''Leipzig is such an amazing city. It's one of the oldest musical cities in the world and they have an amazing orchestra. It's going to be an amazing place to study.''

Miss Drummond (20) is set to begin her studies on September 28.

To help with her costs, she will perform a farewell benefit concert at Marama Hall at 7.30pm on Wednesday.

Guest artists will include Peter Adams, Nick Cornish, Heleen du Plessis, Anthony Ritchie, Adelaide Dunn and Tom McGrath.

''The Dunedin concert is a way of thanking the Dunedin music community for all the support they've given me. It's a farewell and a thank you.''

This year, she graduated with a bachelor of music degree in violin performance from the New Zealand School of Music in Wellington.

The former Columba College pupil gave her first concert in Marama Hall, aged 8, playing a Vivaldi concerto with a string orchestra.

At the age of 11, she gave her debut recital, with Terence Dennis, in Marama Hall.

She later led the NZSM school orchestra, was a co-concertmaster of the National Youth Orchestra and played with Southern Sinfonia and Orchestra Wellington.
