Brockville residents got to know their neighbours a little better at the weekend.

Brockville Improvement and Amenities Society trustee Irene Harris, who organised the event, said about 250 people turned up to celebrate Neighbours Day Aotearoa in the Dunedin community.

The whole event was free, from the sausage sizzle and face painting to the candy floss and popcorn.

A variety of community institutions and organisations came out to tell residents what they offered.

One of the main goals was to establish a neighbourhood watch for the community and for the society to get feedback from them.

Brockville residents wanted more rubbish bins, a public toilet, more facilities for children and there was strong support for establishing a community hub, Ms Harris said.

"We have celebrated Neighbours Day in the past but this was on a ... higher level."

Te Kōhanga Reo o Whakaari and after school care provider Te Kaha Kids attended.

Cornerstone Church members came in "huge numbers" to volunteer, talk about its Discovery Club for children and give debt management advice.

Community Chaplains, Servants Medical Centre, Kāinga Ora, Marching Otago and Community Support also attended.

Members of the nutrition department at the University of Otago had a table with low-cost, nutritious and delicious recipes they developed.

Brockville resident Marlene Pooley provided free advice on skin care, make-up, hair- and body-care products as well as eco-friendly home cleaners.

"That’s what the whole event was about — making those connections with organisations, businesses, educational programmes as well as reaching out to our residents in Brockville," Ms Harris said.
