Adam Morton, formerly of Manchester, is excited about the Rugby World Cup.

He is also excited matches are being played in Dunedin, the English are staying in Dunedin, that the tournament starts on his 46th birthday tomorrow and, really, just about life in general.

So he is having a barbecue, and inviting everybody. Yes, everybody.

Expat Englishman, and rugby nut, Mr Morton featured on the front page of the Otago Daily Times last Saturday after covering his St Kilda house with English flags for the upcoming tournament.

He is to be interviewed on radio tomorrow and by a television reporter on Saturday and he has appeared in Britain's The Sun newspaper having Martin Johnson sign his ODT picture when the English team arrived at Dunedin International Airport on Saturday.

After the reaction to the story, Mr Morton decided to throw open to all-comers what was to have been a small barbecue for a few mates at his Young St home.

He even mentioned to England player Andrew Sheridan at the airport that he should come along.

"I thought I'd get a few friends around and then I thought, `Well, why not make this bigger?'."

So he went around the local neighbourhood and sourced some sausages from Jeff at Jon's Retail Meats down at the corner, a few beers from Bruno at the St Kilda Tavern, and barbecue accoutrements, such as tomato sauce and onions, from Pak'n Save.

He is throwing his gate open to rugby lovers, whichever team they support, from 1pm to 4pm.

"If you're into rugby just turn up - come and have a sausage. I don't expect you to stay; just say hello."

While he is ready for a big crowd, there is someone not quite as excited by the prospect of dozens of rugby-mad fans descending on her home - Mr Morton's partner, Debbie Lee, an All Blacks supporter.

"It'll be All Blacks fans at the front and England fans out the back, I think."

Still, she was not entirely surprised all and sundry had been invited to hers on Saturday.

"This is very normal. You wait until Christmas."
