This Wingatui Rd bridge, near Mosgiel, more than 100 years old, is about to be closed and replaced with a concrete structure costing about $800,000.

Dunedin City Council roading projects engineer Evan Matheson said contractors would move on to the site on Monday, and the bridge, over the Silver Stream, would be closed on Tuesday.

The new bridge was scheduled to open on June 1.

Kevin Gale, of Helicopters Otago, based nearby at the Taieri aerodrome, said he was pleased the council had listened to concerns about the possibility of the bridge being closed, and had decided to replace it.

Replacing the bridge was "fantastic", as it secured it for the future.
