Chris Flack, a Dunedin man who has been living in London for more than 18 months, recently featured in his local community newspaper London Lite as part of its weekly ‘‘Single File'' feature, which sets couples up on blind dates.

The 27-year-old graphic designer was set up with Katherine Jones, a 27-year-old personal assistant, and their date featured dinner and a tour of Madame Tussauds Wax Museum.

‘I thought it would be a bit of fun and be a funny story to tell my friends. The highlight was actually going on a date knowing that everyone was going to read about it the next week.''

However, Mr Flack was initially surprised when he read his date's comments the following week. She said he was ‘‘too enthusiastic'', his questions ‘‘cheesy'' and she was unable to decide if he was a ‘‘chatterbox'' or just nervous.

"The pressure of what someone else might say about you was always in the back of my mind but I found after a couple of minutes I forgot about it and just tried to enjoy myself.

"I was a little bit surprised by her reaction as I thought she really enjoyed herself. My gut feeling, as I explained in the article, was that we had a good time but there wasn't any spark. So I was quite surprised when she was so critical.

"I never thought there was anything wrong with being too enthusiastic.''

As for the difference between New Zealand and British women, Mr Flack believes Kiwis are a bit more relaxed.

"New Zealand girls are very laid back and generally easy-going. British girls are harder to get to know but once you do they are lovely.

"In New Zealand it is common to meet a girl at a bar and then meet up for coffee a couple of days later. In London it is a real dating culture, which means, as one of my friends says, you have to ‘wine and dine' them.

"Girls have higher expectations because of the larger population and diverse culture. They make you work hard.''

Mr Flack and Miss Jones have not been on a second date, but the experience has not put Mr Flack off trying again.

‘‘It was a lot fun, a different experience and you never know who you're going to meet and what you will end up doing.''
