An early-morning gang altercation in central Dunedin has left a man in hospital with stab wounds and another facing charges.
Police were called to the Robbie Burns statue in Dunedin's Octagon, following reports of a stabbing at 1.40am on Saturday.
Last night, a 34-year-old Black Power member remained in Dunedin Hospital in a stable condition.
A 39-year-old Mongrel Mob member will appear in the Dunedin District Court today charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Detective Sergeant John Hedges said the assault was a "continuation of the ongoing conflict between Mongrel Mob and Black Power members".
He confirmed patches were not worn during the incident, and a knife was recovered from the scene.
The assault was captured by CCTV cameras, but police would not release footage as the case was before the courts.
Conflict between the rival gangs erupted two years ago following the stabbing of Mongrel Mob Aotearoa president James Stevenson at the Otago Corrections Facility.
At a prison-wing on March 7, 2009, Stevenson was attacked by two senior Black Power members armed with prison-made weapons, who stabbed and punched him.
Saturday's assault occurred among members of the public, and witnesses are urged to contact Dunedin Police on (03) 471-4800.
