The University of Otago department of design studies professional practice fellow's invention won a 2009 Eurobike Award at the Eurobike Trade Show in Germany last week.

The "Fibre Flare" battery-operated light was one of more than 400 entries from 29 countries.

It won the electronic components category.

Mr Wallace designed the light, which is considered unique because it can be seen at the same intensity from all directions, for Australian lighting technology company ALL Innovations.

He said the design was developed over a 12-month period and was different from other bike lights because it was flexible, robust, came in several colours and could be clipped on to the bicycle or the rider.

The light will now compete against other category winners for overall honours.

The winner will be announced on September 2.
