A $39,000 pier will be built at the Dunedin Botanic Garden duck pond after eliciting only a single quack in debate.
The proposed pier was voted on by the Dunedin City Council's community and environment committee yesterday and was passed with unanimous support.
The pier will be funded by the Friends of the Dunedin Botanic Garden to mark the 30th anniversary of its relationship with the council.
The recommendation was moved, seconded and passed in rapid succession during the committee meeting, with only Cr Lee Vandervis taking a moment to offer "quack'' during debate of the proposal.
The proposal includes a seating area and gravel walkway off the main walkway in front of the winter gardens complex, in an area at present covered by bush.
The pier would cost $1000 in maintenance annually, a report to the committee said.
Options to fund the ongoing maintenance would be considered during the development of the 2017-18 annual plan.
Construction of the pier would begin in April to allow completion of the project before the anniversary celebrations in November.
