A large electronic music festival in Dunedin went smoothly over the weekend, although some Dunedin residents found the prolonged noise "unreasonable".

The Southern Sounds festival took place on the Oval in Princes St from 2pm to 10pm on Saturday.

About 4000 people were expected to attend the event.

On social media many people remarked about how good it was to have big events back in the city. However, some found eight hours of drum and bass to be a bit much.

One social media user called the continuous noise "completely unreasonable", while another had used earplugs to try to dull the "awful bass booming racket".

"The people that haven’t had the bass vibrating through their houses for eight hours straight are the ones that think we are being over dramatic," another said.

A police spokeswoman said seven people were evicted from the festival for alcohol-related incidents, but generally speaking the crowd was well-behaved.
