Balclutha truck driver Glen Arthur (55) was given a $150 ticket by a Mosgiel officer for failing to keep left in Dukes Rd South, on his approach to the intersection of State Highway 87.
Mr Arthur said he crossed the centre line so he could get square-on to the stop lines at the intersection where he would have a better line-of-sight of traffic travelling along State Highway 87, and was critical of police for giving him a ticket for doing what he believed was a safer way to travel through the intersection.
However, Dunedin police road policing manager Senior Sergeant Phil McDouall said the truck was ''well over'' the centre line at the intersection, to the point where no other vehicle travelling in the opposite direction could pass. Truck drivers had the option to use other roads if they thought the Dukes Rd South-SH87 intersection was too dangerous.
''The road is an issue, but it's up to NZTA to decide if they want to change it.
''The law says trucks have to stay in their lane.
''They just can't cross the centre line to get a better view. It's dangerous for everyone involved,'' he said.
Earlier this week, New Zealand Transport Agency Otago Southland highway manager Ian Duncan said the NZTA had not received any complaints about the intersection, and there were no plans to alter it.
