Drivers asked to take care after spate of holiday crashes

Police have reiterated their pleas for drivers to take care on the region’s roads over the holiday period, following several crashes yesterday — one leaving a driver in a serious condition.

The motorist was taken to Dunedin Hospital after driving into a power pole in South Dunedin.

A police spokesman said the incident happened about 12.30pm, in Bay View Rd, between Dalgety and Moreau Sts.

A Hato Hone St John Ambulance spokeswoman said the man received serious injuries as a result of the crash.

Police were not ruling out the possibility that drugs or alcohol were contributing factors.

Several people also avoided major injuries after the vehicle they were travelling in crashed down a bank at Raes Junction about 11.55am yesterday.

A police spokeswoman said the incident happened at the intersection of State Highway 8 and McCunn Rd.

A Hato Hone St John Ambulance spokeswoman said none of the occupants were taken to hospital. They were all treated for minor injuries at the scene.

Emergency services were also called to two crashes north of Dunedin yesterday morning.

The first was a two-vehicle collision in Hampden-Palmerston Rd, at Shag Point, about 9.55am.

A police spokeswoman said the road was partially blocked for a time and both vehicles had to be towed.

The second was in Waikouaiti about 9.35am, when a vehicle collided with a barrier in Ramrock Rd, near SH1.

She said the crash happened on a bend in the road and traffic management was in place for much of the morning.

"Drivers need to slow down and focus on the task at hand.

Remember to get from A to B safely - that’s the goal these holidays," she said.
