Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said a car ran a red light at the intersection of Albany and Grange Sts about 9.50pm and T-boned another vehicle.
The driver of the second vehicle had to be cut out by Fire and Emergency New Zealand personnel. He sustained "non-urgent injuries".
The car which went through the red light was driven by a 30-year-old man who had a passenger who was 20 weeks pregnant.
She was taken to hospital for a check-up.
Police said the road was blocked for "a couple of hours" while people were treated and the scene was cleared.
