The thick, misty drizzle that soaked Dunedin all day on Friday proved too much for many of the city's pay-and-display parking meters.

The result was about 120 meters that motorists found unusable over the weekend and yesterday morning.

The Dunedin City Council said the mist had got inside the meters and soaked the rolls of paper used for windscreen receipts.

The council said motorists who received parking tickets as a result could contact the council to have them cancelled.

Council acting Citipark team leader Reece Smith said technicians had been working on the problem yesterday.

They had fixed many of the meters and Mr Smith expected the rest would be operating again later today.

A technician had to visit each affected parking meter so the damp paper could be removed.

Mr Smith said there were no additional costs as staff were already employed to fix the meters.

The meters affected were in the inner city area. However, the issue was ''an unusual situation''.

''We have never had this many machines affected by weather conditions before, and we will be monitoring this.''

Motorists who received parking tickets while the meters were out of order were urged to contact the council.
