A pair of pig-hunting pet dogs which savaged a neighbour's sheep in Dunedin yesterday will be destroyed.
Police were called to a Brockville property at 9.30am following reports the pig dogs had mauled three sheep "so extensively that one was already dead on arrival", Senior Sergeant Mel Aitken said.
The pair of dogs were from a neighbouring property and had escaped the boundary fence after they were let out for a run.
The dogs were apprehended and surrendered to Animal Control, she said.
The owner was devastated by the actions of his dogs, which were also family pets, Snr Sgt Aitken said.
Dunedin City Council Animal Control team leader Ros MacGill told the Otago Daily Times the dogs - an Australian cattle dog cross and a terrier cross, had been signed over by the co-operative owner to be put down.
The owner had agreed to cover the cost of the damages, she said.
