Dunedin police attend a traffic incident in Burns St, Caversham, that led to the arrest of a disqualified driver.

The driver was pepper sprayed by police after spitting in the face of the arresting officer in Dunedin on Tuesday, police said.

Sergeant Matt Lee, of Dunedin, said police stopped a vehicle in Burns St at 1pm.

During the stop, police discovered the 20-year-old driver was disqualified from driving.

He was aggressive and confrontational, Sgt Lee said.

When police went to impound his car, the man became aggravated and unco-operative.

Police then arrested the man, who spat in the officer’s face several times.

A police spokeswoman said officers then deployed pepper spray to apprehend the offender.

He was charged with driving while disqualified and assault.

He has been bailed to appear in court next Tuesday.
