Disorderly gatherings dispersed

Dunedin police were kept busy by disorder around the city on Saturday night.

Officers attended 14 incidents between 8pm on Saturday and 7am yesterday, a police spokeswoman said.

No-one was arrested but police were required to disperse large groups which gathered in residential areas on two occasions.

About 8.30pm on Saturday, officers were called to Hillary St, in Liberton, following a report of 50 people gathered in the street. Two units attended and were able to disperse the group without incident.

Police were later called to a large gathering in Dundas St in North Dunedin.

Intoxicated young people were blocking traffic in the area and causing nuisance, a police spokeswoman said.

Three police units attended and remained in the area for about 90 minutes dispersing people believed to be in their late teens and early 20s.

''They were on the road and smashing bottles,'' the spokeswoman said.

The group was eventually moved on with no arrests made.

At 7am yesterday, police were called to assist a person who was still on the streets from the night before and heavily intoxicated.
